Our methodology: How we found the best VPNs for Indonesia

There are a number of reasons why you might need a VPN in Indonesia. We know how frustrating it can be to regularly encounter geo-restricted and government-censored online content. There’s also the risk of being penalized for your online activities. To find VPNs that provide rounded protection suitable for a diverse range of users in Indonesia, we based our recommendations on tests in the following areas:

Speed

Not all VPNs are fast enough for streaming and torrenting. Some aren’t even fast enough for browsing. To make sure you don’t end up with a sluggish connection, we carried out multiple speed tests while connected to each provider’s servers in the US.

Internet restrictions in Indonesia

In Indonesia, the government imposes online censorship and surveillance to protect the peace and national security, and for cultural, moral, and religious reasons. The Indonesian government has enacted regulations that grant it the authority to impose online censorship and surveillance. Internet service providers (ISPs) in Indonesia are responsible for implementing the blocks ordered by the government.

For instance, the government uses the Electronic Information and Transactions Law (UU ITE), passed in 2008, to engage in censorship and surveillance of the web.
