Methodology: How we found the best VPNs for Discord

There are hundreds of VPNs on the market. However, to use Discord safely from anywhere, you’ll need one with powerful security, decent speeds, and the ability to go undetected. Needless to say, these requirements significantly reduce the number of options you have. We sorted providers according to the following:

Network suitability

We started by scoring each VPN’s global reach. The best VPNs offer at least 50 different locations to make sure you’re not reliant on servers half a world away. This also impacts which country’s content you’ll be able to access, so more is always better.

Next, we scored providers on their ability to access messaging services like Discord, as well as streaming platforms such as Disney+, Peacock, and Paramount+.

The scores for the above were combined to generate overall scores for each provider. We used these to make direct comparisons.

Surfshark and NordVPN were the highest-scoring providers overall. Both VPNs work well with a broad range of popular messaging services and streaming platforms. They also offer servers in at least 100 countries. IPVanish is the next-best option.

Speed

Slow speeds lead to laggy audio and choppy video calls. With this in mind, we carried out multiple speed tests to weed out any overly sluggish VPNs.

Tests were carried out while connected to each provider’s US servers. To approximate the average user’s experience, we rate-limited our base connection speed to 250 Mbps (which is a little less than the median fixed broadband speed in the US). Measurements were taken using the desktop version of the Ookla speed-testing app.

The results for each provider were averaged and then converted to a score out of 10 relative to the other VPNs. This makes comparison easier, as you can see from the chart below.
